History of Abraham’s Family
March 6, 2023
Reading the Bible, we come to encounter various stories of different characters. Then, why did God record them? We should not just regard them as mere stories like those found in a certain magazine, but just as the Bible says that everything happened in the past occurred to teach us on how to enter the glorious Kingdom of heaven. We can learn who will enter heaven through the history of Abraham’s Family.
Abraham’s Heir Represents God’s Heir
God placed Abraham in the Bible and also allowed the history of his Family to be recorded in the Bible. What is the purpose of Abraham’s family history to be written in the Bible? It is so that we can understand who will enter Heaven, God has allowed us to understand this through the history of Abraham’s family.
First of all, the Bible shows us that Abraham represents God the Father in the Bible, this is seen through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
Luke 16:19-24 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So, he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
The Bible shows us that God is represented by Abraham. Lazarus was taken to Abraham’s side when he died, but when we are saved, we will go to God in Heaven. Also, the rich man called Abraham “Father” a title that belongs only to God in the spiritual world. In this way, the Bible shows us that God the Father is represented by Abraham in the Bible, so it is not much to say Abraham’s heir represents God’s heir. So, by understanding how Abraham’s heir was obtained, we can realize who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven as God’s Heir.
Three Candidates in Abraham’s Family Who Could Inherit Abraham’s Estate
When we read the book of Genesis in which Abraham’s family history is recorded, we can see that there were three candidates in Abraham’s family who could be Abraham’s heir. Eliezer, Ishmael, and Isaac were the candidates for Abraham’s inheritance. Abraham wanted to make Eliezer his heir because he lived many years without having his own child.
Genesis 15:2-3 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so, a servant in my household will be my heir.”
But God intervened and rejected Eliezer who was a servant to be Abraham’s heir.
Genesis 15:4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”
When Abraham was 86 years old, Sarah gave her maid Hagar to be Abraham’s wife. Hagar bore Abraham a son named Ishmael.
Gen 16:1,15-16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; . . . So, Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
But, even though Ishmael was Abraham’s natural son, he was rejected as Abraham’s heir.
Genesis 17:18-19 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” Then, God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
By saying, “but your wife Sarah will bear you a son” God meant that Ishmael would not be his heir, that is why Ishmael, and his mother were sent away, to show that Ishmael would not be Abraham’s heir.
Genesis 21:9-14 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.” The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.” Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.
Thus, son born to Sarah, namely Isaac, became Abraham’s heir.
Reason Why Isaac Became Abraham’s Heir
Let’s look at what made Isaac the heir of Abraham. Eliezer’s father was not a free man Abraham, and his mother was not a free woman Sarah. Also, Ishmael was born to a free man Abraham, but his mother was not a free woman Sarah. Isaac was born to a free man Abraham and a free woman Sarah, so he was made Abraham’s heir.
In Israel, the first-born male was made the heir. If the heir was chosen according to the father’s side, Ishmael who was the first born to Abraham would be the heir. But Isaac was chosen as the heir through his mother Sarah.
Through Heavenly Mother We Become the Heirs of God.
This history of Abraham’s family is not to be considered just as a mere story that happened in the times of the Old Testament. But, as the Bible shows that Abraham represents God the Father and Abraham’s heir represents God’s heir, so this is a prophecy to show who will enter heaven.
That is why the Bible compares the children of promise who will be saved to Isaac.
Galatians 4:28 Now you, brothers, and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.
Like Isaac, those who will be saved must have a Heavenly Mother who is free. Let’s look at verse 26.
Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem above (heaven) is free, and she is our mother.
Here ‘our’ represents the heirs of God who will be saved. The Bible says that they have a Mother who is free in heaven. Can we inherit the Kingdom of Heaven without Heavenly Mother? No, we must have Heavenly Mother to be saved.
Galatians 4:30-31 But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
Here, the Bible says that the son of a slave woman does not inherit with the son of a free woman, that is, the children of the Heavenly Mother.
Through the history of Abraham’s family, we are able to realize that only those who believe in God the Mother as well as God the Father will be able to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, so we should be the children of Heavenly Mother by believing in Her. Let’s believe Heavenly Mother and enter heaven as the heirs of God.
