Restoring Hope to the Nairobi River: A Green Initiative for a Sustainable Future
As the global climate crisis intensifies, young leaders are stepping up to protect the Earth’s vital waterways. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, the ASEZ (World Mission Society Church of God University Student Volunteer Group) organized the “ASEZ Blue Carbon Ecosystem Cleanup” along the banks of the Nairobi River, a lifeline for the region.
This initiative focused on the importance of “Blue Carbon”—the carbon captured by ocean and coastal ecosystems. By cleaning the river, the volunteers aimed to prevent inland waste from flowing into the ocean, thereby preserving these essential carbon sinks. The event was a collaborative effort, bringing together 72 ASEZ members and 10 personnel from the Nairobi City County ‘Green Army’, showcasing a powerful “Green Solidarity” between the youth and local authorities.
From 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, the cleanup took place near Kamkunji Police Station. Despite the warm weather, the volunteers worked with bright smiles, meticulously gathering plastic, discarded vinyl, and general waste that had been eyesores along the riverbanks. Their vibrant energy and dedication drew applause and encouragement from local residents and passersby.

The results of the two-and-a-half-hour effort were remarkable. The team collected a total of 102 bags (50-liters each) of trash. The transformation was immediate; the once-cluttered riverbank was restored to its natural state, providing the local ecosystem with a much-needed breath of fresh air.
One ASEZ participant shared, “It was truly meaningful to clean the river we all share with the heart of a mother. I hope our small actions serve as a foundation for a greener planet and help combat climate change.”
Operating under the slogan “Save the Earth from A to Z,” ASEZ continues to be a light in the community through environmental protection, social welfare, and disaster relief. This successful cleanup at the Nairobi River stands as a testament to the impact university students can have when they unite for the global good.
