ASEZ Conducts Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection Initiative Along Nairobi River

The World Mission Society Church of God University Student Volunteer Group ASEZ carried out a cleanup campaign on July 26, 2026, along the Nairobi River in Starehe as part of its Global Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection Initiative. The activity was organized to raise awareness about the importance of blue carbon ecosystems and encourage practical action against climate change.

Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangrove forests, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows. These ecosystems absorb carbon dioxide at a much faster rate than many terrestrial ecosystems and store it for long periods, making them an essential natural solution for mitigating climate change.

About 88 participants, including ASEZ members, local residents, and officials from the Kariokor Ward Office of Nairobi City County, took part in the cleanup. Together they removed litter and waste from sections of the Nairobi River, helping to improve the local environment. The Kariokor Ward Office also supported the campaign by providing cleaning tools, including rakes.

ASEZ has continued to contribute to communities through various volunteer activities focused on environmental protection and education. In Kenya, the group has organized blue carbon ecosystem cleanups along the Nairobi River, Lake Victoria in Homa Bay, and Sindo Beach. ASEZ volunteers have also painted educational murals at Homa Bay Primary School to create a brighter and more inspiring learning environment for students.
