ASEZ Clean-up in Nairobi -Kenya, Under the Slogan, “Let’s Beautify Nairobi NGARA ”

Through the Slogans “Let’s Beautify Nairobi Ngara”, the ASEZ community comprising of 27 members from Zetech University, Mount Kenya University and Nairobi University students, jointly volunteered to take a clean-up challenge to beautify Nairobi around Ngara and Parklands Estate, the members travelled as far as 10 km to come take part in the clean-up campaign.

Kenya is an agricultural country, and Nairobi which is the capital of Kenya has 112 residential estates is home to  5 million people. Ngara Estate is situated few kilometers from the CBD and it harbors major university branches, private organizations and county offices; Parklands Estate is a home to major businesses, corporations, major hospitals and Embassies and it neighbors Ngara estate.

Nairobi originally is known as place of cool waters from the phrase, Nairobi NGARA.

The local residents always join the voluntary event to beautify our environment.

The maximum number of garbage bag collected was 40 and a minimum of 12 bags during the clean-up campaigns.

The county leaders in Ngara region are always supportive as they provide us with all the necessary tools to clean the environment.

The ward representative has been highly recommending us for the wonderful voluntary work we have been undertaking in the clean-up campaigns, he said, “What a heart we have, zealous community, a family united for safer environment…’’

As the urban population in Nairobi grows, so does the solid waste management burden, despite National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) banning usage of plastic bag in Kenya, solid waste management is still a menace.

In Nairobi, a large percentage of solid waste is managed by the private sector and NGOs; according to public- private partnerships policies.

Without proper controls, solid waste is often dumped in abandoned quarries or similar sites. In Nairobi, municipal waste is taken to the Dandora dumping site, a former quarry some 15km east.

Attention has been locally paid to our monthly activities in the clean up campaigns, we all hope to zealously beautify Nairobi Ngara and purify our environment.
